Twisterstar led Spicepaw down tot the Oak Hill. Her black whisps camoflauged her into the forest enough to be hidden from enemies and prey. Coming upon the hill Twisterstar turned to Spicepaw and murmured loud enough for her to hear, "This is the hunters' crouch." She lowered her body closer to the earth floor and put her weight on her haunches. She looked back at Spicepaw. "Now you try," she mewed as she returned to her normal stance. Twisterstar's ears flicked around for any scuttles she could use to have Spicepaw practice her crouch. She glanced over at her and encouraged her even farther.

Spicepaw watched as Twisterstar showed her one of the hunter's crouches and she followed suit, but not getting it quite right. She returned to normal height and said, "Oops. I guess I need work on my crouch." She purred unevenly and waited for her mentor to reply. She was glad that she was the leader's apprentice and she knew that under Twisterstar's training for her. She wondered what her brothers, Sparrowpaw and Grievingpaw, were doing.

Twisterstar carefully studied Spicepaw's crouch. It was almost good, but she could tell that if she went to jump, she'd make to much noise. "Try not to lean forward so much. Try to keep all your weight on her haunches so that your prey won't hear you. Try one more time." Twisterstar's vivid aqua eyes gazed at Spicepaw. She had almost forgotten to tell Spicepaw a very important detail before she can begin hunting. "Also, Spicepaw, a mouse will hear you before you see it, and a rabbit will feel you before you see it. Now, dont' let me interfer, try the crouch again and then you can hunt before we go back to camp." Twisterstar waited patiently as Spicepaw showed her the crouch, but her mind wasn't on Spicepaw entirely. She had to remember that Flowerkit would need to be apprenticed and given a mentor and so does Arrowpaw and Dancingpaw.

Spicepaw nodded and knelt into the crouch once more. This time she tried what she had learned from Twisterstar and padded forward towards the mouse that was nearby. The mouse didn't know that Spicepaw was there until it was too late. Spicepaw laid the mouse at Twisterstar's paws and asked, "How was that?" She hoped she had done well and that her mentor would be proud of her. The young she-cat thought of Twisterstar as her mentor first and then her leader and maybe later her friend. The lightly colored femme waited for a reply as she sat on her haunches.

Twisterstar's eyes lit up. "Beautiful, Spicepaw. You did exactly what I told you and did the crouch perfectly. Well done." Twisterstar praised the apprentice warmly. She looked around the forest floor for a tricky catch. A few fox-lengths away, a thrush was pecking for worms. "Why not try that thrush over there." Twisterstar mewed as she pointed her tail in the direction of the thrush. "Be as quiet as you can, and keep your tail up. The thrush will hear it drag along the forest floor as you stalk towards it." Twisterstar sat down where she was and licked her paw as she eyed Spicepaw from the corner of her eyes.

Spicepaw loved showing off her tail so she did as Twisterstar asked and stalked forward. The thrush heard Spicepaw and started flapping. The thrush wasn't too high in the air when Spicepaw caught it and killed it, but not before the bird sqawked. Spicepaw returned to her mentor and dropped the bird at Twisterstar's paws. "Well scratch this area. Now that the thrush has sqawed this area will be dead for awhile."

Twisterstar nodded. "You are absolutely right. We might as well head back to camp. I'll grab the mouse, you carry your thrush." Twisterstar padded a few tail lengths away to where Spicepaw had laid the mouse at her paws. She picked up the mouse in her jaws and padded back over to Spicepaw. "Let's go." Her mew was muffled through the fur of the mouse. She led her apprentice back down to camp, hearing all the noise coming from it. Apprentice's were busy at their duties and warriors were dividing among patrols. She would confront her deputy on what the clan has been doing while she was away training Spicepaw. Then she would gather a clan meeting. Twisterstar's muscles rippled under her pelt as she trotted to the camp. She glanced behind her making sure Spicepaw was following. She crawled under the entrance and into the camp.

Spicepaw followed carrying the thrush and was glad that she had done a job well done on her first day of training. The little she-cat hoped to do more and maybe one day be a great a warrior as Twisterstar. Spicepaw wondered if she would ever meet any other cats in a time of peace from the other Clans. If so then she couldn't wait, but if not then she had to prepare herself for many battles ahead.
